Latest Beta Lets You Set ChatGPT As The Default Assistant On Android

by Kris

With the release of v1.2025.070 beta for Android, users can now designate ChatGPT as their default assistant app. This update allows users to trigger OpenAI’s chatbot through the same buttons and gestures previously used for the system’s default assistant.

By setting ChatGPT as the default digital assistant, users can access it by long-pressing the home button when using three-button navigation or swiping up from the bottom corner in gesture navigation mode. Additionally, if the long-press power button option is enabled, it can also launch ChatGPT’s voice mode.

However, those hoping to activate ChatGPT through voice commands will be disappointed. Even when set as the default assistant, ChatGPT cannot be triggered with a hotword, as this functionality remains exclusive to preinstalled apps with access to privileged APIs.

Meanwhile, Google has recently unveiled plans to transition from Google Assistant to its more advanced, AI-powered Gemini system. This shift will affect most mobile devices and extend to other platforms, including tablets, cars and wearable devices. According to a recent blog post, the migration from Assistant to Gemini will be implemented gradually over the coming months.
