The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has announced a series of incentive programmes aimed at advancing the country’s digital creative industry and enhancing its global competitiveness. The newly launched initiatives are intended to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a hub for content creation across animation, film, and video games.
Describing the sector as a “strategic economic industry with strong potential,” MDEC chief executive officer Anuar Fariz Fadzil said the initiatives are designed to create high-value jobs, nurture intellectual property and drive export revenue. “Through these financial incentive programmes, we aim to strengthen the entire value chain – from talent development to market access – while positioning Malaysia as a globally competitive hub for digital content creation,” he said during the Digital Creative Industry Engagement Session 2025 that was held yesterday.

Among the key programmes is the Digital Games Testbed Programme, with RM3.5 million allocated to support at least five Malaysian game development companies. The programme is intended to foster new game genres, strengthen local studios, and encourage international collaborations. It is open to locally-owned studios with a proven track record and a clear strategy for expanding intellectual property.
In animation, the Animation Shorts Challenge Programme will provide RM1.2 million in funding to support 12 trained participants in developing 12 new animation short IPs. Participants will receive expert guidance, connecting local talent with industry leaders to build skills and enhance global market readiness.

MDEC is also introducing the Business in Metaverse Programme, which offers RM1 million in support for 200 Malaysian businesses adopting metaverse-based marketing strategies. Each business could receive up to RM5,000 to create virtual storefronts and develop gamified or branded digital assets aimed at boosting brand visibility and customer engagement.
Anuar reaffirmed MDEC’s broader commitment to nurturing local innovation, supporting industry players and strengthening Malaysia’s digital ecosystem to create jobs and opportunities. According to the organisation, the country’s digital content market has generated RM87.25 billion in revenue and RM11.18 billion in export sales, providing employment for more than 11,000 Malaysians since 2011.
