Nissan Unveils The Frontier Pro, Its Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Truck

by Kris

Nissan debuted its first-ever plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) and also its first electrified pickup truck, the all-new Frontier Pro, at the Shanghai Auto Show. This model is a product of the Nissan-Zhengzhou joint venture.

Later this year, it is set to launch in the Chinese market, followed by a global rollout. As such, there is a possibility that the PHEV Nissan Frontier Pro may eventually be available in the Malaysian market.

Now, let’s take a closer look at what this pickup truck has to offer. Starting with the powertrain, it features a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder internal combustion engine paired with a transmission-mounted, high-output electric motor. Together, they deliver a total output of 40PS and 800Nm of torque. Additionally, the EV-only range is targeted at 135km.

Furthermore, the model is equipped with a 5-link rear suspension and Nissan’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, which, according to the automaker, seamlessly manages torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. It is also electromechanical rear differential lock for off road performance. Meanwhile there are four selectable drive modes; Hybrid, Pure Electric, Performance, and Snow.

In terms of design, the Nissan Frontier Pro reflects the concept of “Rugged Tech,” combining a bold, modern exterior with a spacious and refined interior. The front fascia features an illuminated Nissan logo in vibrant white, representing the brand’s move into a new era of electrified mobility.

Five distinctive LED light elements span the hood line, with the three central lights paying subtle tribute to the iconic 1980s Nissan D21 hardbody pickup. Inspired by the D21’s recognizable three-slot hood design, the Shanghai-based team reimagined the feature with advanced LED technology. All variants come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels and 265/65R18 tires.

Inside, the Frontier Pro offers a premium experience with a panoramic roof, a 10-inch LCD instrument panel, and a large 14.6-inch infotainment screen. For enhanced comfort, the front seats feature heating, ventilation, and even seat-back massage functions.

Designed with active lifestyles in mind, the truck includes practical elements like roof rails and an electronic retractable cargo cover. It also features a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) port that allows users to power household devices with up to 6kW of electricity from the plug-in hybrid battery.

As for pricing, Nissan has yet to announce official figures. However, more details are expected later this year when the vehicle is officially launched in China.
