Samsung Project Moohan Is Officially Galaxy XR; Costs US$1,799.99

Samsung has had its MR headset, codenamed Project Moohan, in the works for quite awhile. Now, the product is finally out in the open, with a new name attached as it goes on shelves. In keeping with the company’s naming convention, the headset is simply called the Galaxy XR, confirming a prior leak.

Inside, the headset runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 chipset, with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage. The micro OLED display come with a resolution of 3,552 x 3,840, with 95% DCI-P3 coverage, and up to 90Hz refresh rate.

As you’d expect from a MR headset, the Samsung Galaxy XR comes packed with cameras galore. Though their pixel count are unspecified, it has two “high-resolution” pass-through cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras and four eye-tracking cameras. There’s also a depth sensor and a flicker sensor, alongside five Inertial Measurement Units (IMU).

While the AI stuff can let you turn 2D images in to 3D, Engadget reports that it can also take photos and videos in 3D. The external cameras also allow for hand tracking and gesture control. Alternatively, you can use it with physical controllers, or even a mouse and keyboard. The inward facing ones are also used for iris recognition on the biometric lock front.

Speaking of periphery, connectivity support includes WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. For better or worse, the Samsung Galaxy XR also uses an external battery pack. This allows it to cut down the weight of the headset itself, which weighs in at 545g. Said battery pack is rated for two hours of general use, or 2.5 hours of pure video watching. The company says that you can be using the headset and charging the battery pack simultaneously.

Also, the battery pack can also be used to power “other compatible devices” like a standard power bank. Though it’s worth mentioning that the connector looks to be a proprietary one.

According to the report, the headset has a interpupillary distance of 54 ~ 70mm. You also get the option to slot in prescription lenses by Kodak if you need them.

The presence of Google Gemini is also pretty prevalent throughout the Samsung Galaxy XR experience. And because it runs Android at its base, just about anything you get from the Google Play Store works on with the headset. This includes some games, some if which can also support real-time coaching and tips from Gemini.

The Samsung Galaxy XR comes with a price tag of US$1,799.99 (~RM7,611) Which is pretty hefty, but it’s just over half of what Apple is asking for the Vision Pro. Though it doesn’t help that the company is charging separately for the travel case and controllers, at US$250 (~RM1,057) for each. The report says that the headset is now available in the US and in its home market. No mention of other markets yet, but this may be one of those cases where the South Korean tech giant limits where it is being sold.
