TikTok Parent Company ByteDance Reportedly Developing Steam Rival

by Thora.Hansen

Apparently, ByteDance is working on its own international game distribution platform. Dubbed GameTop, the TikTok owner’s upcoming offering is set to compete against existing marketplaces like Epic Games and Steam. Much like the latter, the new platform will focus on aspects like user-created content, social features, as well as tools for developers.

According to Chinese publication Tech Planet, ByteDance has already begun recruiting talent for the project. The company describes GameTop as an international game distribution platform meant for personalised gaming experiences, while also offering creative tools for user-generated content. Additionally, the platform will feature an integrated player social hub.

Based on official job listings, it seems ByteDance is building a user operations team to drive user growth, activation, retention, and re-engagement. Aside from that, the company is looking to introduce player segmentation and level systems. Other features will include rewards and badges aimed at incentivising activity and engagement.

The creation of GameTop aligns with the changes made within the company’s gaming division. Following the appointment of former Perfect World executive Zhang Yunfan, it has pivoted to a more pragmatic approach focused on efficient product development. At the moment, its game studios are working on new titles and experimenting with AI. It seems ByteDance is looking to focus on game publishing, and GameTop is its ambitious next step.

It is worth noting that there is an existing app on the Google Play Store with the same name. This app offers mini-games and social features, not unlike the platform ByteDance is working on. However, it is unlikely that the two have any relation. The app’s developer, Pylon Games, does not seem to be affiliated with ByteDance.
