by Kris

After much teasing and anticipation, the national automaker Proton has finally launched its second fully electric (EV) model, the eMAS 5. The EV hatchback, which the automaker claims to be its first affordable EV, is offered in two variants: Prime and Premium.

As reported previously, in terms of design, the EV features LED headlights designed to resemble feathers, complete with intelligent high beam control and LED daytime running lights shaped like arrows. The exterior is further enhanced by a dual-tone roof finished in black.

At the rear, the same feather motif is applied to the taillights, complemented by a roof spoiler. The design of the eMAS 5 is completed with 16-inch wheels. The car is available in five shades — Monsoon White, Slate Grey, Graphite Silver, Quartz Rose, and Marble Cream. The first three colours come as standard, while the latter two are exclusive to the Premium variant.

Inside the cabin, the eMAS 5 comes with a 14.6-inch infotainment system and an 8.8-inch instrument cluster, both powered by an Automotive Grade Chip. The cabin supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and runs on the Atlas Auto Operating System with voice command available in both the national language and English. Another key highlight is the Proton eMAS mobile application, which provides a live charging map displaying nearby charging stations, their availability, and charging prices.

The eMAS 5 is a compact electric hatchback that measures 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,580 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. Although smaller than the eMAS 7, Proton claims it still offers a roomy interior, featuring 890 mm of rear legroom.

Practicality is also a strong point, with a 70-litre frunk, a 375-litre boot (expandable to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded), and 32 storage compartments, including a 20-litre centre console. Inside, the cabin features leather seats and a two-tone leatherette steering wheel for added comfort and style. The interior is offered in two tones: Alabaster White and Flint Grey.

Powering the car is an 11-in-1 integrated rear motor that produces 85 kW and 150 Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels. It can accelerate from 0–50 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The motor is paired with a 30.12 kWh battery in the Prime variant, offering a WLTP-rated range of 225 km. Meanwhile, the Premium variant is fitted with a 40.16 kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of 325 km. Using a 71 kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes, while standard AC charging operates at 6.6 kW.

On the safety front, the eMAS 5 is equipped with 12 advanced driver assistance features, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). It also comes with six airbags, rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera with a 3D display for added peace of mind.
