by ohiyo

Perodua and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the development of Malaysia’s next generation of electric vehicles (xEV). This partnership aims to educate and train future engineers while fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

The automaker’s president and CEO Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad highlighted the initiative as a step towards establishing Malaysia’s own xEV technology and driving technological development. On the other hand, UTM’s deputy vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Rosli Md Illias emphasised the collaboration’s role in equipping graduates with vital skills to enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global automotive sector.

Key initiatives include enhancing UTM’s engineering curriculum, establishing a satellite lab at UTM’s Skudai campus, and fostering knowledge exchange on xEV technologies. The partnership will also involve joint research, talent development, and training programmes, strengthening Malaysia’s automotive innovation and ecosystem.

In case you missed it, Perodua showcased the latest prototype of its first EV, the EMO-II, at the KL International Mobility Show (KLIMS) in December last year. The vehicle is said to be fully developed in-house, while the finalised model is expected to launch later this year at a target price below RM90,000.
