Apple has introduced two new health-focused features in Malaysia, expanding its suite of wellness tools for Apple Watch and AirPods Pro 2 users. These additions include sleep apnea notifications on Apple Watch and a hearing aid feature on AirPods Pro 2, both of which are now available for users without the need for a software update, provided they are running iOS 18.
Initially introduced alongside the Apple Watch Series 10 last year, the sleep apnea detection feature was unavailable locally until now, pending approval from local health authorities. Its rollout in Malaysia was hinted at earlier in January when it appeared in the Medical Device Authority listing.
The sleep apnea detection feature utilises Apple Watch sensors to monitor breathing patterns during sleep. By tracking sleep-disordered breathing over a 30-day period, the watch can notify users of signs consistent with moderate to severe sleep apnea. This data can then be shared with healthcare professionals for further evaluation. The feature is supported on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Apple is also introducing an over-the-counter hearing aid feature on AirPods Pro 2, allowing users to assess their hearing health and receive personalised audio adjustments. The hearing test, which takes approximately five minutes, uses a clinical-grade pure-tone audiometry method to determine hearing levels in each ear.
Results are stored in the Health app, where users can access and share them with healthcare providers. Additionally, AirPods Pro 2 can now automatically reduce loud sounds and optimise audio output based on a user’s hearing profile.
