Discord has released a set of new updates for its desktop app, including a new version of its Game Overlay and a refreshed UI. These enhancements include a new full dark mode called Onyx, which is particularly suitable for OLED monitors. Additionally, Discord now offers four base themes: Light, Ash, Dark, and Onyx.
The new Overlay is said to deliver a faster experience compared to the previous version, which was directly integrated into the game’s window and could impact performance. It also incorporates individual widgets that can be repositioned and customised to suit different game types, along with a new action bar.

This action bar provides quick access to voice and video controls, enables one-click game streaming, and allows users to join voice calls and watch friends’ game streams directly within the Overlay, creating a split-screen-like experience. Additionally, the redesigned Overlay is optimised to function without triggering anti-cheat engines, allowing it to be compatible with more games.
In the desktop refresh, Discord has introduced additional customisation options, including a resizable channel list that accommodates longer channel names. Users can also choose between three UI density options, Spacious, Default and Compact, to adjust spacing for readability and comfort.

Furthermore, voice and video settings have been centralised into a single bar, making it easier to access controls. The update also enhances visual indicators: a stronger red glow appears when the microphone is muted, while a green glow signals an active camera. To improve usability, Discord has refreshed its colours and illustrations to enhance legibility, reduce visual noise, and ensure consistency across desktop and mobile platforms.
