BYD has released official images of the new Yangwang U8 hybrid SUV ahead of its debut at the Auto Shanghai Show, which is happening this tomorrow on 23 April. From the official pictures released, one can see that the 4×4 is massive in size and comes equipped with a powerful range-extended electric powertrain. It is also hinted that it will be called the ‘U8L’.
According to rumours, the “L” in its designation stands for an enlarged wheelbase, which is evident from the longer rear doors. Additionally, it appears that the rear overhang has been extended, suggesting that the U8L will accommodate a third row of seats, along with increased legroom in the second row.

The standard Yangwang U8, for example, has a wheelbase of 3,050 mm and dimensions of 5,319/2,050/1,930 mm. According to Chinese social media site Sohu, the Yangwang U8L is anticipated to have a body length of 5,600 mm and a three-row, six-seat configuration.
In addition, the BYD Yangwang U8 boasts a minimum turning diameter of 11.52 metres, a minimum ground clearance of 285 mm, and approach and departure angles of 36.5 degrees and 35.4 degrees, respectively. Once the rear seats are folded down, the boot capacity can be increased to 2,050 litres from its usual 1,031 litres.

Other changes discernible from the official images include a black roof, shield-shaped rims, concealed door handles, and a golden exterior paint job. The external rear spare tyre has also been removed.
Details of the powertrain for the U8L have not been revealed by the automaker. However, for reference, the U8 was powered by a 2.0T engine and a 40.95kWh Blade LFP battery, providing it with a CLTC pure electric range of 180 km and a comprehensive range of 1,000 km. It is also expected that the Yangwang U8L will be equipped with BYD’s “God’s Eye” intelligent driving technology.

As for pricing, it remains unconfirmed, though it is expected to be higher than its predecessor. For your reference, the BYD Yangwang U8 came with a price tag of CNY1.098 million (~RM659,000).
